How hydrangea reproduces: the subtleties and secrets of the process

Hello, dear flower growers, regular readers of my blog! Near the house, we always try to grow a bright colorful sea of flowers, buying new items in stores, begging from friends and even quietly stealing directly from other people's flower beds, if there is no way to ask. Of course, when buying, everything is simple - you bought a seedling or seeds and plant them, but what to do if you got a cutting? Here I will hurry to the rescue and tell you how hydrangea breeds, it is with this unusual beauty that I want to introduce you today.

I want to warn you right away - the seed method is quite long, and only suitable for such reproduction. If you have a varietal beauty, then be prepared for the fact that she will lose the color scheme and the characteristics inherent in this variety.

There is no need to prepare seeds for sowing in a container, all that is required of you is to prepare the soil (it is better to buy a ready-made mixture) and spread the planting material evenly on the surface. It is also not worth deepening, just lightly press the pre-moistened earth with your hand.

Be sure to cover the container with the planted seeds with a film or glass. If the room temperature is up to 20 degrees, then in half a month you will get beautiful green sprouts. Here I hasten to disappoint you - young hydrangeas will be ready for transplanting into a flower garden only in a few years, until that time they will have to be kept on the windowsill, only taking them outside in the summer for airing and hardening.

cuttings

I like this method the most, because it is easy to propagate an exquisite plant with cuttings, especially if you accidentally managed to get a beautiful twig. For this method of reproduction, only green shoots are used, with several leaves and buds. The ideal time to take on the increase in hydrangea bushes is the beginning of the appearance of buds.

A little secret - try to prepare planting material in the morning, when the plant is full of moisture, the sun's rays have not had time to dry the shoots. Immediately send them to containers with water, only after that proceed with the preparation of the cuttings. Be sure to remove the top part along with the buds, they will not be needed.

Cut the remaining cuttings into several parts, make sure that each has several pairs of leaves. Be sure to remove the lower ones, and cut off the upper ones in half - this will speed up germination.

Special stimulants will help speed up the appearance of roots, but if they are not there, do not worry, I will tell you my proprietary secret. Take a spoonful of natural honey or aloe juice and dissolve in a small amount of water - you have an excellent preparation for rooting. You can check on other plants - it works flawlessly.

After standing for several hours in solutions, the cuttings are ready for transplanting into pots. The soil is simple

  • 2 tbsp. peat chips;
  • 1 st. coarse sand;
  • 1 st. humus;
  • a handful of wood ash.

In hot sunny weather, in addition to watering, make it a rule to spray the cuttings with warm water several times. New tiny leaves will appear in almost a month. Wait a bit and feel free to transplant young plants grown at home into a flower garden.

For the winter, be sure to create favorable conditions for your pets - high hilling, a thick cover of spruce branches or dry leaves, and a brushwood hut. If winter pampered with snow, then try to pour a small snowdrift directly above the bushes.

Proper propagation by layering

This method is especially good if panicled hydrangea will multiply. Even before the buds open, go to your beauty, carefully loosen the soil around her and break up large clods. Choose the most suitable branches and dig shallow grooves near them. Place shoots in the recesses, I usually attach them to the ground with brackets made by myself, be sure that the branches will remain where you need them.

It remains to carefully moisten the soil and patiently wait for the germination of the roots. I will share with you a little trick - take a piece of wire and tightly pull the shoot near the kidney, which will be sprinkled with soil. Over time, a small growth forms there, near which the roots will begin to sprout.

During the season, visit the hydrangea often and carry out hilling in those places where layers are laid. Until autumn, the embankment should reach 30 cm. You can dig out new bushes as early as October, but do not rush to determine the hydrangea for permanent residence - do it in the spring. Now just dig in, cover warmly and leave to winter.

The division of the bush

Usually this method of reproduction is used when transplanting an old hydrangea bush to a new place. I have had a tree hydrangea for a long time, this year it's time to move it to the flower garden, because I planned a new design near the house. How did I transplant it? Now I will share with you.

First, I abundantly and generously moistened the soil under the bush, and waited for a while until the soil was saturated with moisture. After that, he armed himself with a shovel and with difficulty dug up a hydrangea with a large clod of soil. Starting to divide, he carefully examined the new shoots, then with his hands and secateurs he divided the bush into several parts - each should have several strong powerful roots and young buds.

My experiment

Last fall, I specifically purchased a young hydrangea seedling and immediately went to the garden. It was not difficult for me to dig a deep hole, but keep in mind that you can’t scatter the earth, lay it out with wide sides. After some effort with a shovel, I installed a bush in a hole in such a way that the shoots fanned out on the sides.

I sprinkled the root system with soil, as usual, but I pressed the branches to the ground and covered them with a thin layer of soil. He laid a thick ball of peat mixed with humus on top and left everything in this form until spring. Believe it or not, with the advent of heat, a separate bush began to grow from each shoot, feeding so far from a common root system. During the season, young hydrangeas have grown beautiful roots, I just have to plant them in different places in the garden.

Convinced how easy it is to propagate your beauty? Now you can safely buy a beautiful bush, bring a twig from friends or share your plant - you are guaranteed success!
