What types of hydrangeas are. Hydrangea - species and varieties

Bushes hydrangeas are unlikely to leave anyone indifferent. In ornamental gardening, this plant is valued for a huge variety of inflorescence shapes, a wide color palette, charming emerald green, large leaves, incredible unpretentiousness and generous flowering. You can talk about hydrangeas for hours, and in the end you realize that you haven't touched the most important thing. The bushes are especially delightful in autumn, when you can simultaneously contemplate flowers, buds, leaves of different colors and seed boxes on one plant. Let's figure it out with you what types of hydrangeas are and which of them are considered the most popular. And also consider how different types of hydrangeas look like.

Paniculata hydrangea can be found naturally in the southern part of Sakhalin Island, Japan and China. Hydrangea is a light-loving mesophyte, and therefore it grows in coppice oak forests or on forest edges. It is a shrub or a low tree up to 10 meters high, forming a rounded dense crown. Hydrangea has leaves that have more pronounced pubescence from below.

The flowers of the plant are collected in wide-pyramidal, densely hairy panicles, reaching a length of up to 25 cm. The sterile flowers are large, up to 2.5 cm in diameter, formed by white petals, which eventually turn pink. Fruiting flowers are white, smaller, with early falling petals. The plant begins to bloom and bear fruit when it reaches the age of five. Hydrangea attracts growers with its long flowering period and luxurious decorative characteristics.

Important! When buying a hydrangea, it is necessary to take a responsible attitude to the choice of planting material, since most diseases are transmitted through seedlings. The fact is that young plants have a weaker immune system, which makes them susceptible to various infections. The infection of hydrangeas with phytoinfections is facilitated by the strong thickening of the seedlings and its long-term cultivation in conditions of high humidity.

The bushes bloom in mid-June and bloom until mid-October, or even until the end of October... The fruit is a capsule up to 3 mm long. The seeds are small, numerous, ripening until mid-October and with a viability of up to 95%. Hydrangea can tolerate frosts down to -25 ° C, which allows it to be successfully grown in temperate climates. It grows better on fertile soils and has a high gas resistance, which allows it to be successfully grown in urban conditions. In a comfortable environment, the plant can reach sixty years of age. Gardeners prefer to grow varieties of panicle hydrangea, which have large flowers that exude a pleasant aroma.

The most popular varieties of hydrangea paniculata:

  • "Matilda" Is a shrub up to 2 meters in height and a crown width of up to 3 meters. The plant has a rounded crown formed by dull green leaves, 7 to 15 cm long. During flowering, the plant is covered with large creamy white flowers, which then turn pink, and during the flowering period - greenish-red. Flowers are collected in inflorescences up to 25 cm long.
  • "Kyushu"- shrub, reaching a height of about 3 meters and having the same diameter fan-shaped crown. On the bushes, tough, upright shoots of red-brown color are formed. Its leaves are dark green in color with red petioles. During the flowering period, the hydrangea is covered with white, large flowers exuding a pleasant aroma, collected in wide and rather massive inflorescences. The variety is characterized by increased frost resistance.
  • "Unique" is a bush, reaching up to 3 meters in height and width, covered with emerald green leaves in autumn and spring. During the flowering period, the bush is covered with white, and during the flowering period pink flowers, collected in large and long, up to 25 cm, inflorescences. The variety is distinguished by long and abundant flowering.

The tree hydrangea comes from North America. The plant is a bush with a height of 1 to 3 meters, with a rounded crown, formed by slightly pubescent shoots and leaves bare on the underside, which makes it easy to identify this type of hydrangea. The upper side of the leaves has a rich dark green, and the lower is a bluish color. The plant is covered with white, sterile flowers about 2 cm in diameter, collected in complex umbrella-shaped inflorescences.

Did you know? The bark of a tree-like hydrangea can peel off in several sequential layers at once, which gave the name to the species "seven cortex".

The plant begins to bloom when it reaches four years of age. Treelike hydrangea has a long flowering period from July to late October. The species is characterized by increased resistance to frost and the ability to withstand temperatures as low as -30 ° C. The plant is distinguished by high regenerative abilities, with a single freezing of the branches, their rapid recovery is observed. Treelike hydrangea will grow well only on fertile soils, not capricious, but quite demanding for watering.

Bretschneider's hydrangea grows naturally in the mountainous and mixed forests of Northern China. It is a deciduous shrub with a broadly rounded crown, reaching a height of 3 meters. The bush has reddish-brown shoots, covered with delicate trichomes and peeling thin bark plates. It has ovate-elliptical or ovate, pointed with a wedge-shaped base, dark green leaves, glabrous above, and covered with weak pubescence below.

The leaves of the species acquire a yellow-brown color in the fall. The sterile flowers are white at first, and later reddish or purple in color and are collected in wide umbellate inflorescences, reaching a diameter of up to 16 cm. Bretschneider's hydrangea blooms in July and blooms until mid-October. This is the most drought-resistant and winter-hardy species, capable of withstanding a temperature drop of more than -30 ° C. The bushes are distinguished by high decorative qualities, due to which they are actively used in landscape design in group and single plantings.

Oak-leaved hydrangea bushes have high decorative characteristics, so they can easily become the main decoration of the garden. North America is considered the homeland of the species. Despite the excellent external data, culture has not yet become widespread in our country.

Important! There is a serious danger in the flowers of hydrangea. Eating flowers or plant leaves will inevitably lead to nausea, vomiting, weakness, skin itching and increased sweating, and in particularly difficult cases, convulsions and death. The thing is that hydrangea contains the strongest poison, which can have a destructive effect on the human body even in small doses.

Oak-leaved hydrangea is resistant to adverse environmental conditions, which allows it to quickly adapt to any weather conditions. Plants are large deciduous shrubs that can grow up to 2 meters in height in comfortable conditions. During the growing season, it is covered with textured large seven-lobed leaves, resembling oak in shape and having a length of about 25 cm.Young shoots and leaves are covered with a thin web of white trichomes, which degrade as the bush matures and eventually disappear on the upper side of the leaves, remaining only on back side.

In summer, dark green leaves flaunt on the bushes. With the onset of cold weather, their color changes and changes, becoming crimson, which significantly increases the decorative qualities of the bushes. During the flowering period, the bushes of oak-leaved hydrangea are covered with large paniculate inflorescences formed from white cone-shaped flowers. The plant has a straight, lignified trunk at the base. Every year, the bush adds at least 50 cm to the height. Adult plants of this species are characterized by excellent frost resistance, which allows them to withstand temperatures as low as -25 ° C or more.

Young bushes are exposed to low temperatures, and therefore after planting for the first five years, they must be covered for the winter. Two varieties of this type are widely popular among domestic gardeners: "Harmony" and "Applause". "Harmony" during flowering is covered with large inflorescences with a diameter of about 20 cm, consisting of white or cream flowers. "Applause" pleases with plants, reaching a height of up to two meters and covered with huge snow-white inflorescences.

Ashy hydrangea came to us from North America. The bush reaches a height of just over 2 meters. Its young shoots are pubescent and covered with broad ovate leaves 6 to 15 cm long. At the base, the leaves are rounded, have pointed tops and a serrated edge. Their upper side is bright green, and the lower is tomentose, which gives it a smoky color. Ash hydrangea flowers are collected in inflorescences, having from 5 to 20 cm in diameter. The species perfectly tolerates a winter drop in temperature, loves high-quality watering and feeding, as well as loose fertile soils, the acidity of which is 5.5.

Plants of serrata hydrangea are bushes up to 2.5 meters high and 1.5 meters wide. On the bushes, naked and pubescent shoots are formed, covered with elliptical or ovoid leaves from 5 to 10 cm in length, pointed at the top and pressed down on both sides.

Did you know? In order to increase the decorative characteristics of hydrangeas, it is necessary to spray the bushes with an aqueous solution of gibberellin at a concentration of 50 mg / l every 7 days. This will allow for larger flowers and more generous flowering.

During the flowering period, blue or white flowers bloom on the bushes, reaching a diameter of 4 to 8 cm and covered with flat or convex bristles. The middle flowers are smaller and have a white, blue or pink color. The acidity of the soil affects the shade of flowers. For the winter in middle lane the bushes are covered with dry leaves, spruce branches or paper.

Rough hydrangea came to us from Asia, its bushes can be found in the Himalayas, Central China and Taiwan. Plants of this species are spherical bushes up to 2 meters in diameter and 2 meters in height. Rough hydrangea has a straight, branched lignified trunk. During the growing season, it is covered with purple-green oblong pubescent leaves. In summer, on last year's shoots, rounded lilac-blue apical inflorescences are formed, consisting of large and small flowers. The bushes grow well on fertile, with neutral acidity soils and do not tolerate direct sunlight.

Groundcover hydrangea is a deciduous shrub up to 3 meters high, forming a wide-round crown. The species was classified as a crop in 1982. The plant produces reddish-brown, pubescent shoots with bark exfoliating in thin plates. The bush is covered with ovate-elliptical or ovoid, pointed, wedge-shaped at the base and serrated along the edge of the leaves up to 12 cm in length. The leaves are dark green above, and blue below. In autumn the leaves turn yellow-brown... The barren flowers are white, but turn purple or reddish by the end of summer. Flowers are collected in wide umbrella-shaped inflorescences, reaching a diameter of up to 16 cm. The species is used for landscaping parks and forest park areas, in single and group plantings.

The name of the hydrangea variegated, or variegated, is due to the fact that the plant has leaves, the upper and lower sides of which are very different from each other: the upper side is darker and slightly pubescent, the lower has a light green color and more pronounced pubescence. The bush is formed by strong, weakly bending shoots. When cultivated in favorable conditions, the plant can reach a height of 2 to 3 meters. The bushes are covered with wedge-shaped inflorescences that form on the branches of the first year of life. The variegated hydrangea can withstand a significant drop in temperature, which allows it to be grown in climatic zones characterized by cold and frosty winters.

Large-leaved hydrangea is a beautiful ornamental shrub that, when grown in the subtropical zone, reaches up to 4 meters in height. It is easy to assume that the further north the plant is planted, the smaller its bushes will be. The culture has erect shoots covered with ovoid bright green leaves. Large sterile pink flowers with dark carmine strokes form on the bushes. Barren flowers reach a diameter of up to 3.5 cm, fruiting flowers are smaller and have a white, lilac or blue color. On garden forms, spherical inflorescences with a diameter of 20 to 25 cm are formed. The shade of flowers depends on the acidity of the soil and its saturation with nutrients. To get blue or light blue flowers, you will have to add iron salts and aluminum alum to the soil every two weeks. The species was classified as a crop back in 1790.

Did you know? Hydrangea is unique in that some of its species are able to isolate from acidic soils and accumulate aluminum in themselves, which gives its flowers a blue or blue color.

Contrary to popular belief that hydrangea is capricious, those who grew it claim that it is one of the most unpretentious plants. And given its luxurious appearance, we can say that this plant is quite worthy to become the main decoration of your site.

TYPES OF HORTENSIA

The blooming hydrangea in the garden charms and attracts the eyes like a bride or a princess at a ball. It is not surprising that this beauty received its name in honor of the sister of Karl Heinrich, the prince of the Holy Roman Empire.
The genus Hortensia, or Hydrangea (from the Latin name Hydrangea), includes up to 70 plant species. Sometimes they call the number 75, highlighting some subspecies as independent species. Among them are deciduous and evergreen, thermophilic and frost-resistant types of hydrangea. How to choose a hydrangea for your garden, the range on offer is so huge?

TYPES OF HORTENSIA AND VARIETIES

Many people confuse the concept of "species" and "variety" or consider them equivalent.
A species is a unit created by nature as a result of an evolutionary process. For example, Hydrangea tree-like, Hydrangea large-leaved, Hydrangea paniculata are deciduous species. On their basis, as well as other species, people, through selection, have created hundreds of varieties of hydrangea.
This understanding is important when choosing plants for a garden in a particular climatic zone. No matter how many varieties of Large-leaved Hydrangea a person breeds, it will remain a deciduous shrub with simple leaves, loving moisture and not tolerating growing on alkaline substrates. No amount of selection will make it evergreen, or its leaves complex.
Therefore, when choosing hydrangeas that will decorate your garden plot, it is necessary to take into account not only the beauty of the varieties, but also their maternal forms - the growing conditions depend on this. Of paramount importance is the frost resistance of the type of hydrangea or its variety, as well as the acidity of the soil for varieties with "colored" inflorescences. Another important feature when choosing a type of hydrangea for a garden is the presence of two types of flowers in hydrangeas: fertile (fertile) and sterile. Have different types hydrangeas and varieties, the ratio of fertile and sterile flowers in the inflorescence is different, their ratio and color determine the decorative qualities.

COMMON DECORATIVE TYPES OF HORTENSIA AND VARIETIES ON THEIR BASIS

TYPE HORTENSIA WOOD

Treelike (Hydrangea arborescens) is one of the most popular types of hydrangea, which is called white globular or white bush (pictured). Origin - North America.
Variety "Large-flowered" ("Grandiflora") has inflorescences reaching 25 cm in diameter, their shape can be either spherical or flat. Plant height ranges from 1 to 3 m.
Inflorescences formed at the ends of herbaceous (annual) shoots are kept on the plant until frost. In the garden, trees of the hydrangea species are well combined with perennials and woody plants, they can be grown as a tapeworm on the lawn.
The "Radiata" variety has inflorescences with a variety of fertile flowers (viburnum type). In such an inflorescence, small flowers are located in the center, and sterile along the edges, they serve to attract insects. This type of hydrangea reproduces easily, winters well, withstanding frost up to 20 ° C. If the branches are frostbitten after winter, they are pruned before foliage appears.
Variety "Anabel" has a height and crown diameter of up to 2.5 m, in the middle lane is usually lower. Under the weight of huge inflorescences (up to 18 cm), the branches can bend down. The color of the flowers at the beginning of flowering is green, after - white, at the end - light green.
Variety "Incredible" surpasses the previous one in the number of flowers in the inflorescence.

SPECIES LARGE-LEAVED HORTENSIA

Large-leaved, or large-leaved (Hydrangea macrophylla), photo in the garden, is a type of hydrangea that has received the popular name "garden" for its popularity. On its basis, more than six hundred different varieties of hydrangea have been bred. Some of them have only sterile flowers in their inflorescences. Such varieties are propagated only by vegetative methods (cuttings, cloning, planting a bush).
The two main varieties of large-leaved hydrangea are Japanese (Hydrangea macrophylla var. Japonica) and changeable (Hydrangea macrophylla var. Mutabilis). They are distinguished by the shape of the inflorescences - corymbose, viburnum in the Japanese and spherical or hemispherical in the variable. Widely known large-leaved hydrangeas, which can change the color of flowers depending on the acidity of the soil. Their corolla color varies from pink to blue and purple.
Nikko Blue - one of the varieties of the garden Hydrangea species, depending on the acidity of the soil, the flowers are blue (on acidic soils) or pink (on alkaline).
This type of hydrangea cannot be classified as cold-resistant. Hydrangea macrophylla needs shelter for the winter, but even so, the plant can freeze.

In recent years, frost-resistant varieties of this beautiful species have been created. These include, for example, all varieties of the Forever & Ever® series - they can withstand frosts at -24 ° without shelter, and under shelter, like roses, they winter at lower temperatures. If the shoots freeze in winter, the bushes will bloom anyway, since inflorescences are formed both on young (formed from the upper buds of last year's shoots) and on old branches. The height of the bushes is up to 90 cm, depending on the variety, the flowers are pink, blue, red (later purple), white with a pink eye or pure white. Photo: View Large-leaved Hydrangea, varieties

TYPE HORTENSIA SILVER

Serrated (Hydrangea cerata), right photo, - this type of hydrangea has viburnum corymbose inflorescences, similar to the large-leaved hydrangea, but more frost-resistant. Inflorescences can change color depending on the change in soil pH. Although breeders have tried to develop a completely blue variety "Blue Bird", even when the acidity decreases, it gradually changes color from deep blue to purple or lilac.
In the Bluebird serrated hydrangea variety, the 10-centimeter inflorescence resembles a viburnum. Fruit-forming small red-purple (blue on acidic soils) flowers are located in the center, most of them. Along the edges they are framed by large, few light lilac flowers with a diameter of 2-3 cm.

TYPE HORTENZIUM DUSTERED

Paniculata, or drooping (Hydrangea paniculata), photo, is an excellent frost-resistant type of hydrangea, whose homeland is the Far East and the Japanese islands. Its green annual shoots manage to become completely woody during the season. Panicle hydrangea can grow in the form of a bush or a small tree up to 5 m high.
The inflorescences of this type of hydrangea have a pyramidal shape, similar to lilac inflorescences. Flowering begins in mid-summer and lasts until autumn. Flowers also change color, becoming purple or reddish by autumn, and then green. But this color change is not related to soil acidity. The plant does not need to be covered for the winter, withstanding temperatures of -30 ° and below. AT hydrangea garden panicle is used for single and group plantings, when creating hedges, planted in alleys.
The most famous variety of panicle hydrangea "Grandiflora" ("Grandiflora") has magnificent inflorescences, the length of which can reach 30 cm.
The variety "Tardiva" in the inflorescence organically combines many small fertile flowers and large sterile flowers.
Breeders have bred hydrangea varieties with pink flowers "Pink Diamond" and "Pinky Winky" and greenish inflorescences "Silver Dollar", "Limelight".
One of the most popular hydrangea varieties panicle vanilla Fraise (Vanille Fraise).
The new French variety “Fraz Melba” conquers with perfection. On straight, strong burgundy shoots, there is a huge dense 30-50-centimeter inflorescence resembling a lilac, consisting of densely spaced sterile flowers. At the beginning of flowering, they are white, gradually acquire a pink tint, at the top of flowering - red-burgundy, which is why white (above) and red (bottom) flowers are simultaneously revealed on the inflorescence. This type of hydrangea needs to be pruned annually to obtain larger inflorescences. The bush can be up to 2 m high.

VIEW OF BRETSHTEIDER'S HORTENSIONRight photo: panicle hydrangea

Bretschneider's hydrangea (Hydrangea bretschneideri), left photo, is a shrub that reaches a height of 3 m in its homeland, in China, in culture, usually does not exceed 1.5-1.8 m.Flowers in viburnum-shaped inflorescences change color from white - at the beginning of flowering, to pink - in its middle. At the end of summer, they become burgundy or crimson. Plants of this type of hydrangea winter well, without requiring shelter.

SPECIES HORTENSIA MISCOOL

Motley, or mixed pubescent (Hydrangea heteromalla), is another type of hydrangea that is incredibly resistant to cold (withstands temperatures down to -40 °). This hydrangea is called groundcover, although it grows in the form of a shrub, sometimes reaching 2-2.5 m. The inflorescences are corymbose, flat, white, in the process of flowering they can become pink or crimson.

TYPE HORTENZIA PERESHKOVA / CRETTED

Petiolate (petiolate, Hydrangea petiolaris), photo, is a type of hydrangea with an interesting life form. It is a perennial liana native to the Far East, the Kuril Islands and Japan. It can spread along the ground, performing the functions of a ground cover plant, but in this case it does not bloom.
In the presence of support, it grows rapidly, attaching to it, and blooms with viburnum-shaped inflorescences, which can change color depending on the acidity of the soil. In this it is similar to the hydrangea large-leaved. This vine clings to the supports with the help of sucker roots, therefore, you need to ensure that the hydrangea does not choose fruit trees for its support.
This type of hydrangea winters well under the snow, withstanding frosts down to -40 degrees. But if attached to a support, it can freeze. In this case, the damaged branches are cut off in the spring. Unlike other species, petiolate hydrangea feels good in partial shade and in the shade. In the garden, petioled hydrangea is best suited for creating hedges.

Oak-leaved, right photo, - the main difference between this type of hydrangea is five-lobed leaves, similar to oak. In autumn, their green color changes to purple. Inflorescences - white, up to 10 cm in diameter - consist of sterile and fertile flowers, resemble viburnum. In the garden, they are planted as a tapeworm or in woody compositions. In severe frosts, the species freezes over, but recovers well in spring.

If you plant a hydrangea in your garden, then never regret it and be sure to fall in love with this plant , regardless of the type and variety. Hydrangea will delight you with its unique charm all summer long, bringing calm and touching beauty to the garden.
The botanical name of the shrub is hydrangea, translated from Greek it means "a vessel with water" and speaks of a very important quality of the plant - increased hygrophilia. In Japan, the hydrangea is called "yearning for water." In spring and summer, its leaves evaporate a lot of moisture, and if there is little water in the soil, the bush will immediately wilts and then recover with great difficulty. Those who are going to grow hydrangea in their garden should definitely remember this. And planting it is definitely worth it, since even one hydrangea bush can completely transform a garden, add French charm and a classic note to it.

Hydrangea ( Hydrangea) belongs to the family of hydrangea ( Hydrangeaceae) and includes, according to various sources, from 35 to 70 species. There are upright and curly, deciduous and evergreen, frost-resistant and thermophilic, dwarf and tree-like hydrangeas. The widely cultivated species of the temperate zone are classified as deciduous plants.

Havebloom wordsi

Often you can hear complaints from flower growers that the hydrangea has not bloomed for many years. There may be several reasons. It is important to know and take into account all of them.
The firstwhat is important for hydrangea flowering is a balanced diet. If you overfeed the plant with organic matter out of great love, you will not wait for flowering this year. Remember, it is better to underfeed than overfeed: nitrogen can be applied only in spring and in moderate doses, and then only potassium-phosphorus feed.
Second - hydrangea blooms on last year's growths, usually from the upper buds. Namely, they are usually damaged by frost. Therefore, shelter for the winter is required.
Third - hydrangea loves diffused sunlight, easily tolerates partial shade, grows even under the crown of a walnut. In sunny places, it will also take root, but the flowering in this case will be short-lived, the petals will quickly fade, and the decorative effect will be lost.

Garden hydrangea 'Mariesii Perfecta'

And a few more important aspects... For hydrangea to feel comfortable in our gardens, it needs loose, acidic soil, rich in humus and nutrients. Hydrangea loves freedom and prefers spacious, light or semi-shaded places. And, of course, it must be provided with good watering, and the soil must be mulched with the bark of coniferous plants or high peat.

Pruning hydrangea

Pruning is an important part of hydrangea care. All hydrangea varieties respond very well to pruning as it promotes abundant flowering. Correct pruning hydrangea is to remove old inflorescences until the first pair of strong and healthy buds. To avoid excessive thickening of hydrangeas, in adult plants, several old, weak or too dense branches are also pruned at the root every year.
For abundant flowering treelike and panicle hydrangeas Annual spring pruning is recommended and should be done in the spring before bud break. If you are late with this, then the hydrangea does not develop well and sometimes even may not bloom at all.

Garden hydrangea 'Sibilla' Multicolored hydrangea

On the contrary, rortensia is garden almost not pruning. The bushes should only be rejuvenated - every fourth branch of an overgrown bush is trimmed every year, or damaged branches are trimmed. If you cut the branches (this is a typical mistake for novice gardeners), then you can have lush green hydrangea bushes, but without flowering. The only exceptions are newest bands varieties - Forever& Ever® and You& Me®, which bloom on the shoots of the current year due to faster ripening of the branches.
Pruning hydrangeas in late autumn involves cutting off all the remaining inflorescences on the bush, this is done so that the branches are not broken by the weight of the snow in winter.

Diseases and pests

Hydrangeas are almost not affected by diseases and pests. However, in alkaline soils, they can be deficient in iron and magnesium, which are vital for the formation of chlorophyll in the leaves. The newly formed leaves can be almost white. In the old days, gardeners recommended to bury iron objects (nails, horseshoes, cans) near pink hydrangeas, which should increase the iron content in the soil and eliminate the manifestation of deficiency. In the modern arsenal there are more effective methods, for example, treatment with iron chelate or acidification of the soil with iron sulfate.

Types and varieties of hydrangeas

In our latitudes, of greatest practical interest are the following types: hydrangea (Нydrangea arborescens), large-leaved hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla),panicle hydrangea (Нydrangea рaniculata) and petiolate hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris).
Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens)
Treelike hydrangea is a fast-growing shrub from 1 to 3 m tall, with a rounded crown and slightly drooping shoots. The upper side of the hydrangea leaf is tree-like green, the lower is glaucous. White flowers are collected in corymbose inflorescences up to 15 cm in diameter. Fruit-box - up to 3 mm in size. Blooms profusely from the age of three. Long bloom, from the first half of July to October. Treelike hydrangea is demanding on the soil and its moisture.
This type of hydrangea has excellent frost resistance - down to -30 ° C. In the case of single frozen branches, they easily recover and bloom profusely in the first year.
In garden design, the tree hydrangea is an architectural and exceptionally showy plant. It goes well with roses, clematis and lilies. Looks surprisingly good in woody and shrub compositions and in live unformed hedges.
Hydrangea Annabelle
Hydrangea arborescensAnnabelle
Hydrangea Annabelle - a very spectacular flowering shrub, with huge, up to 20-25 cm, white inflorescences. It has a long, from July to October, flowering. Feature of the variety Annabelle is the correct, hemispherical shape of the inflorescences and color change: when blooming, they are pale green, and then white.
The light requirement is partial shade, but hydrangea Annabelle can grow in sunny places, as well as in the shade, with diffused lighting. Differs in winter hardiness, rapid growth, demanding soil and moisture. Better than other species tolerates the presence of lime in the soil.
An adult bush has an almost regular spherical shape. The height and diameter of the crown of an adult plant is up to 2.5 m, although more often the height of this variety is up to 1.5-2 m. The crown is wide and spreading, very beautiful. The leaves are round, 8-15 cm, bright green on the upper side, lighter on the bottom. The autumn color of the leaves is green.

Hydrangea tree-like 'Annabelle'

Hydrangea large leafnand I, or garden (Hydrangea m acrophyl l a)
Hydrangeas are plants with moist soil. Depending on the species, they are more or less dependent on the constant presence of moisture in the soil. The most demanding of moist soil and shading is garden hydrangea ( Hydrangea macrophylla).
Under natural conditions, this plant is a perennial shrub up to 1 m tall, which blooms very profusely with large spherical inflorescences up to 20 cm in diameter. At the beginning of flowering, this species has a pale green color, and then becomes white, blue, pink, lilac, red and purple. Garden hydrangea is not hardy enough and often freezes under the conditions of the climate of Ukraine, with the exception of the south of the country and Transcarpathia. If you carry out the warming of the plant for the winter with the help of agrofibre, then the garden hydrangea will always delight you with abundant and long flowering.
The breeders have found a group of varieties You& Me ® (frost resistance - up to -20 ° C), having two wonderful qualities - a two-color flower in the inflorescence and the ability to bloom on the branches of the first year already in August of the first year due to a faster ripening process of the branches. (photo # 3) The group of varieties is also a real sensation Forever& Ever®, which also blooms on the branches of the first year. This means that even if the entire above-ground part of the hydrangea of \u200b\u200bthese two unique clusters freezes out, then beautiful, huge crimson-pink inflorescences will bloom on the new shoots that have risen in the spring in August.

Garden hydrangea 'Freudenstein' Garden hydrangea '' Blauer Zwerg '

Hydrangeas are wonderful, hardy shrubs that should certainly be included in the list of the top ten flowering plants in the world. Many of us remember the hydrangeas growing in grandma's gardens and think of them as old-fashioned plants. Those old varieties really had one drawback - they were, as a rule, too tall and lanky. However, in recent years, breeders have developed some great new varieties that are more compact and suitable for small gardens.
One of these dwarf varieties is hydrangea Blauer zwerg (sometimes sold as 'Lavblau). Its height is up to about 0.8-1 m. The flowers are spherical, 12-17 cm in diameter, covering the entire bush. The color of the flowers is from pink to bright blue, the flowering time is June-July. It blooms on the shoots of the last year. (photo # 12)
Garden hydrangea Freudenstein - one of the tested varieties. Its height is approximately up to 1.2-1.5 m. The foliage is shiny, dark green all season. The flowers are spherical, 12-17 cm in diameter, completely cover the bush. The color of the flowers is from bright pink on alkaline soil to purple-violet on acidic soil. Flowering time is July-August, often longer. Blooms on shoots last year.
Large-leaved hydrangea Gerda steiniger - height up to about 0.9-1.2 m. The foliage is shiny, dark green all season. This variety is very popular due to its huge globular inflorescences that change color during the summer. The color of the flowers is from deep pink on alkaline soil to blue and purple on acidic soil. Flowering time: July - until early autumn. Also blooms on last year's shoots.

'Mariesii Perfecta (formerly known as 'Blue Wave ) Is a well-known and popular French variety that is considered the perfect and classic example of hydrangea. It is a small, 1-1.5 m, deciduous shrub with glossy, light green leaves. From the beginning of summer, it is covered with a large number of umbellate inflorescences, evenly distributed over the crown. Each inflorescence is colored from lavender blue to light pink, depending on the acidity of the soil.
Garden hydrangea 'Sibilla (synonym 'Masja ). German variety of garden hydrangea, distinguished by a later flowering period than others. The bush is compact, up to 1.0-1.5 m high, with dark green shiny foliage. Inflorescences are spherical, large, 15-30 cm in diameter, color - from violet to dark pink, depending on the reaction of the soil, by the end of summer they can become greenish-pink.
Hydrangea paniculata (Hydrangea p aniculata)
Hydrangea paniculate is a shrub with a rounded dense crown, elliptical or ovoid leaves up to 12 cm long. Above, the leaves are slightly pubescent, from below - much stronger, especially along the veins. Flowers in long wide-pyramidal densely hairy panicles - up to 25 cm long, melliferous. It blooms for a long time - from mid-June to October. The longevity of the plant can be envied - in the literature there are references to 60-year-old bushes.
The most common varieties of panicle hydrangea in Ukraine are Mathilda, Kyushu, Unique, are characterized not only by large flowers and long flowering, but also by the presence of a pleasant aroma.

Hydrangea variety paniculata Wim's Red (picture on the left) immediately became a world sensation: it has a very large inflorescence - up to 30-35 cm in length, with a charming honey aroma. But this is not all of his dignity. In this hydrangea variety, the inflorescences are white until the end of July, in August they become pink, and from September they become burgundy-red. The flowering period is very long - from mid June to October. (photo number 20)
Today, new varieties of panicle hydrangea for Ukraine are also presented on the green market - Vanille fraise ® , Bobo ® and Silver dollar .
Inflorescences Vanille fraise® have a beautiful and delicate combination of tones - from white to deep pink at the same time on the bush in the summer. At the end of summer, they acquire a juicy pink-raspberry color.
Hydrangea paniculata Grandiflora

A well-known and very popular variety. With all the variety of varieties of panicle hydrangea, many gardeners prefer the old and proven variety. 'Grandiflora... It is grown in the form of a stem or bush with a round, dense crown. Without pruning, the plant can reach 10 m in height. Usually plant height is about 3 m, with the same crown width.
Differs in abundant and long flowering. Any annual shoot of panicle hydrangea usually ends with an inflorescence, and it has a lot of shoots. The flowers when blooming are creamy white, in full bloom, pure white, then pink, in autumn - greenish-red, collected in wide-pyramidal inflorescences up to 30 cm long. Blooms for 2-3 months, starting in July. Flowering is very abundant - branches can sink to the ground under the weight of inflorescences.
Withstands severe frosts, even if it freezes over, it soon recovers well. It is better to grow this variety in open, sunny places, although it can grow in partial shade.
Used for mixborders, creating arrays, in single and group plantings, can be planted in beautifully flowering hedges. This bush will decorate the gazebo, it will look good at the entrance area; perfect plant for thematic, for example, "white" gardens.

Hydrangea paniculata Unique

It is appreciated for long-term flowering, fast and active growth, stability in urban conditions. Like Unique , used for planting in open spaces, creating powerful, tall mixborders or free-growing hedges.
Stalked hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris)
Stalked hydrangea is also called climbing or climbing. The homeland of this wonderful hydrangea is Sakhalin and Japan. This species, unfortunately, is not yet very widespread in our gardens. But this is practically the only liana with large flowers and long flowering, which can grow in partial shade and at the same time bloom beautifully. This is a liana-shaped shrub with a mass of aerial roots and suckers, with the help of which, attaching to the bark of trees and other surfaces, it climbs to a height of 25 m. In the absence of support, the petiolate hydrangea spreads along the ground. Inflorescences are white-cream, very large, up to 20 cm in diameter, fragrant, wonderful honey plants. Young seedlings in the first years build up the aerial part very slowly, and it is difficult to believe what kind of giant hydrangea can become over time. But after three years, the plant is already rapidly growing its branches. Petiolate hydrangea is not very demanding on soil fertility, prefers moist loams, but does not like stagnant water and waterlogging.
Climbing hydrangeas in vertical gardening must be regularly pruned so as to ensure balanced growth of branches in different directions - vertically and horizontally. For this, it is necessary to observe the correct ratio of vertical growth and branching of plants. This is usually achieved by fairly intensive pruning of fast-growing plants. In this case, it is necessary to guide and tie up the stems in order to cover the wall area, and cut off the shoots growing from them in order to stimulate the formation of side shoots.
