Luke 22 chapter. Interpretation of the New Testament with Bulgarian Theophylact. Bibliography of Foreign Works on the Four Gospels

1 The feast of unleavened bread, called Passover, was approaching.

2 And the chief priests and scribes were looking for how to destroy Him, because they feared the people.

3 And Satan entered Judas, who was called Iscariot, one of the twelve,

4 And he went and talked to the chief priests and leaders how to deliver him to them.

5 They rejoiced and agreed to give him money;

6 and he promised, and looked for an opportune time to deliver him to them when not in the presence of the people.

7 The day of unleavened bread came, on which the passover [lamb] was to be killed,

8 And [Jesus] sent Peter and John, saying, Go, prepare us to eat the Passover.

9 And they said to him, Where do you command us to prepare?

10 He said to them: Behold, at your entry into the city, a man carrying a jug of water will meet you; follow him to the house he enters,

11 And say to the master of the house: The teacher says to you: where is the room in which I can have the Passover with my disciples?

12 And he will show you a large upper room furnished; cook there.

13 And they went, and found as he told them, and prepared the passover.

14 And when the hour came, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him,

15 And he said to them: I very much desired to eat this passover with you before my suffering.

16 For I tell you that I will no longer eat it until it is completed in the kingdom of God.

17 And taking the cup and giving thanks, he said, Take it, and divide it among yourselves,

18 For I say to you that I will not drink of the fruit of the grape until the kingdom of God comes.

19 And taking bread and giving thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is my body, which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

20 Likewise, the cup after supper, saying: This cup [is] the New Testament in My blood, which is shed for you.

21 And behold, the hand of him betraying Me is with Me at the table;

22 However, the Son of Man goes according to his destiny, but woe to that man to whom he is delivered.

23 And they began to ask each other which one of them would be that would do it.

24 There was also a dispute between them, which of them should be considered the greatest.

25 And he said to them, Kings rule over the nations, and those who possess them are called benefactors,

26 but you are not: but who of you is greater, be as the least, and the ruler as the servant.

27 For who is greater, the one reclining, or the one serving? is it not reclining? And I am among you, as a servant.

28 But you were with me in my afflictions,

29 And I will bequeath to you, as my Father commanded me the Kingdom,

30 So you may eat and drink at my meal in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel.

31 And the Lord said: Simon! Simon! behold, Satan asked to sow you like wheat,

32 but I prayed for you, that your faith will not fail; and once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.

33 He answered him: Lord! I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.

34 But He said, I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you deny three times that you do not know Me.

35 And he said to them, When I sent you without a sack and without a bag and without shoes, did you lack anything? They answered: nothing.

36 Then he said to them: but now whoever has a bag, take it, and also a bag; and whoever does not have, sell your clothes and buy a sword;

37 For I say to you that it must be fulfilled in me and this written: and numbered among the evildoers. For what is about Me comes to an end.

38 They said: Lord! behold, here are two swords. He said to them: Enough.

39 And going out, he went as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples also followed him.

40 And coming to the place, he said to them: Pray, lest you enter into temptation.

41 And he himself departed from them to cast a stone, and, kneeling down, prayed,

42 saying: Father! Oh, if you were pleased to carry this cup past Me! nevertheless, not my will, but thine be done.

43 And an angel appeared to him from heaven and strengthened him.

44 And being in agony, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

45 Rising from prayer, He came to the disciples, and found them sleeping with sorrow

46 and said to them, Why are you sleeping? stand up and pray lest you fall into temptation.

47 While He was still saying this, a crowd appeared, and in front of them walked one of the twelve, called Judas, and he came up to Jesus to kiss Him. For he gave them such a sign: Whom I kiss, He is.

48 Jesus And he said to him: Judas! do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?

49 But those who were with him, seeing where the matter was going, said to him: Lord! shall we not strike with the sword?

50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

51 Then Jesus said: leave it, that's enough. And touching his ear, he healed him.

52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and the rulers of the temple and the elders who had assembled against him: As if you came out against a robber with swords and stakes to take me?

53 Every day I was with you in the temple, and you did not raise your hands against me, but now your time and the power of darkness.

54 Taking him, they led him and brought him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed from afar.

55 When they made a fire in the middle of the court and sat down together, Peter sat down between them.

56 One maid, seeing him sitting by the fire, and looking at him, said: This one was with him.

57 But he denied Him, saying to the woman, I do not know Him.

58 Soon afterwards another, seeing him, said: You also are one of them. But Peter said to this man: no!

59 An hour passed, yet someone insistently said: as if this one was with Him, for he is a Galilean.

60 But Peter said to the man, I don’t know what you are talking about. And immediately, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed.

61 Then the Lord, turning, looked at Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, as He said to him: Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.

62 And going out, he wept bitterly.

63 The people who held Jesus scolded and beat him;

64 and closing Him, they struck Him in the face and asked Him: Prophets, who struck You?

65 And many other blasphemies were uttered against Him.

. The feast of unleavened bread, called Easter, was approaching,

. and the chief priests and scribes were looking for how to destroy Him, because they feared the people.

The scribes sought to kill Him (Jesus). Since the time of Easter was coming, and they therefore saw the danger for themselves from the gathering people, especially on the feast, they finally looked for a way to kill Him without being exposed to any danger.

. And Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the twelve,

"Satan entered into Judas", "One of the twelve", that is, one of the close and sincere students. No one rely on himself, but be attentive to your life, because you have a terrible enemy. Some words: "One of the twelve" understood this way: complementing only the number of apostles, but not the true apostle and disciple. For what kind of true disciple is he who stole what was put into the box? ().

. and he went and talked with the chief priests and rulers how to deliver him to them.

. They were delighted and agreed to give him money;

. and he promised, and looked for an opportune time to betray him to them outside the crowd.

Thus, Judas accepted Satan, who had entered into him, and agreed to betray Jesus to those seeking Him. For this means the word "promised", that is, finally concluded a condition and a contract. And he was looking for a convenient time to find Him (Jesus) without the people, that is, alone, and betray them. Here he calls “chiefs” the chiefs over the buildings of the temple, or the overseers of the deanery. For the Romans appointed some overseers for the people, so that they would not be indignant, for they were rebellious. These are what he calls chiefs (in Church Slavonic - "voivods"). Or, perhaps, those who, belonging to the priestly staff, had military positions, are called voivods. For, suffering from a love of primacy, they intervened in such positions. Therefore, he called them the governors of the temple, perhaps in order to hurt them more sensitively.

. The day of unleavened bread came, on which it was necessary to kill the Passover: lamb,

That Passover, called Fasek in Hebrew, means the exit from Egypt, many said about this, and in general everything that was happening then on this holiday, the saints explained. And we need to say what day is called the day of unleavened bread. "Day of Unleavened Bread" calls the quarter, in the evening of which it was necessary to season Easter.

. and sent: Jesus Peter and John, saying: go, prepare us to eat the Passover.

. And they said to him, Where do you command us to cook?

. He said to them: Behold, at your entrance into the city, a man carrying a jug of water will meet you; follow him to the house he enters,

So, on Thursday, perhaps in the morning, the Lord sends the disciples Peter and John, one as a lover, the other as a beloved, sends them to a “strange” house; for neither Himself nor the disciples had their own, otherwise He would have celebrated the Passover with one of the disciples. See what poverty! He sends them to an unknown person to show that He also accepts suffering voluntarily. For if He did not wish to suffer, then, having inclined the mind of this unknown person to accept them (Himself and the disciples), He could have done in the Jews what He pleases. Some say that the Lord did not say the name of this man and did not announce him, but brings the disciples to his house according to some reason so that the traitor, having learned the name, would not show the Pharisees this house, and they would not come to take Him before He will establish a supper before teaching His spiritual secrets. Therefore, Christ, after a little, says:. That is, I did my best to hide from the traitor, so as not to undergo suffering before the time, before the teaching of the sacrament. Anyone can accept such an explanation.

. and say to the master of the house: The teacher says to you: where is the room in which I would have the Passover with my disciples?

. And he will show you a large, lined room; cook there.

Why does the Lord celebrate the Passover? In order to prove by all His actions to the last breath that He is not an enemy of the Law. Let us also eat this Passover rationally, let us, under the day of unleavened bread, mean all life spent in the spiritual light, not having the slightest shabbiness of the previous disobedience in Adam. As we lead such a life, we must be saturated with the mysteries of Jesus. These mysteries will be prepared by Peter and John, activity and contemplation, ardent zeal and peaceful meekness. For the believer must be fervent to do good, zealous against evil, and meek toward those who do evil. For one must hate evil, and not the one who does evil. This needs to be cured because it suffers. To do evil means that to be embarrassed by the evil one and to suffer with malice. If we have Peter and John preparing for the supper, that is, the good life that Peter portrays, and the true teaching that John the Theologian portrays, then "man" will meet with such preparers, that is, we will then find a truly human being, created in the image The Creator, or better, the Creator, who carries a "jug of water." Water means the grace of the Spirit, as the Evangelist John teaches (), and a jug means the destructibility and softening of the heart. For he who receives spiritual grace is humble and contrite in heart, but the Lord gives grace to the humble (). Conscious of oneself as earth and ashes and speaking with Job: "You made me like clay"... (), he will carry the grace of the Spirit in a breakable and breakable vessel of his heart. Following this mood, we will enter the house of the mind, of which the master is the mind, will show us a large tidy room. "Upper room" is a high room of the mind, that is, divine and spiritual objects, among which he lives and turns with love. They are removed, because they have nothing harsh, but a curve for such a mind is made in the right way, as Solomon said: "They are all clear to the prudent and fair to those who acquire knowledge" (). You will not be wrong if you say that the mind, although it performs a high deed, acts according to the strength of the mind, however, its knowledge is still stretched out and very close to the earth. But knowledge is truly high, and ignorance, which exceeds the mind, is higher than any height, when the mind no longer acts, but perceives the action. First, we must act with our minds, then the grace of the Lord will work in us, capturing us, like the prophets, and cutting off all natural power. It is truly said that in such and such a prophet there was a rapture from the Lord. Just like here, when this upper room is removed, Jesus comes with His disciples and performs the ordinances, coming to us Himself and showing His own power in us, and not waiting for our coming to Him. The "disciples" of God the Word are all contemplation on creation. When in this way the Word will act in us, then we will understand the communion of the Passover and will be even more saturated with reflections on the creation, according to the words: "I look to heaven - the work of Your fingers" ().

. They went and found, as he told them, and prepared the Passover.

. And when the hour came, He sat down, and the twelve Apostles with Him,

They ate the Passover while standing: how then is it said of the Lord that He reclined? They say that after eating the lawful Passover, they lay down after, as usual, there were some other dishes.

. and he said to them: I very much desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer,

The Lord says to the disciples: "I longed to eat with you this Easter before My suffering"... He seems to be saying: this is for Me the last supper with you, therefore it is kind and longed for Me, for in the next time I will not eat with you. This is just as those who have set out on a journey lead their last speeches with family and friends with greater pleasure and love. And otherwise: I "I really wanted ... to eat this Easter with you", because in it I have to teach you the great mysteries - the mysteries of the New Testament. By this He shows that He will willingly suffer. For Him, since He knew about the forthcoming sufferings, no doubt, it was possible to avoid them, just as in the preceding time ().

. for I tell you that I will no longer eat it until it is completed in the Kingdom of God.

. And taking the cup and thanking him, he said: Take it and divide it among yourselves,

. for I tell you that I will not drink of the fruit of the grape until the kingdom of God comes.

The words: "I will not drink of the fruit of the grape until the kingdom of God comes" some of the saints understood this: until I rise again. For after the resurrection, when dealing with the disciples, He ate and drank with them, as Peter says to Cornelius: "Who ate and drank with Him after He rose from the dead" (). That the resurrection is the Kingdom of God is obvious. For the resurrection is the destruction of death. Death reigned from Adam to Christ; and from that time, destroyed, she yielded victory and the kingdom to the Lord, as it is said: "Death! ... where is your victory?" (). And David says: "The Lord Reigns" (), and then in the explanation of how he reigned, he adds: "Clothed with greatness"when the body got rid of corruption and was adorned with the Divine, as Isaiah says: "So majestic in His garment, appearing in the fullness of His power" (). And the Lord Himself after the resurrection says: "All authority has been given to Me" (). So, when the resurrection came, which, as having destroyed death, was called the Kingdom of God, the Lord again drank with the disciples, assuring that He was not resurrected in a ghostly way.

Others understood the future state under the Kingdom of God, and the revelation of secrets by Him under the drinking of the Lord with us in the next century. For He, the Human Lover, delighting us, Himself rejoices and, nourishing us, He Himself nourishes, and imputes our drink and food, that is, teaching, as food to Himself. So He will then drink some new drink with the worthy, always revealing something new and extraordinary to them.

. And taking bread and giving thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying: This is my body, which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

. Likewise, the cup after supper, saying: This cup: there is in My Blood, which is shed for you.

Luke seems to be mentioning two bowls. One says: "Take it and share it among yourself" (), which another may call the image of the Old Testament, and speaks of another after the breaking and distribution of bread. The Lord Himself divides it among the disciples, calls it the New Testament and says that it is renewed in His Blood. For when the Old Law was given, then the seal was used for the blood of foolish animals (); but now, when God the Word became Man, it is sealed to us by His Blood. In words: "Which is betrayed for you" and "Which is spilled for you" otherwise it shows that His Body was betrayed and His Blood was shed for the apostles alone, but for the whole human race. So, when he says that he is betrayed "for you", you understand: for your human race.

The ancient Passover was celebrated for deliverance from the slavery of the Egyptians, and the blood of the lamb was shed for the preservation of the firstborn: and the new Passover was for the forgiveness of sins and for the preservation of thoughts appointed and dedicated to God.

First the bread is taught, and then the cup. For before, there is a difficult and inconceivable activity. Virtue is preceded by sweat, just as bread is not only cultivated by the sweat of the brow, but also requires labor when consumed (). Then, after the labors, there is joy from the grace of God, which is signified by the cup. For whoever labors in an inconceivable virtue, he is subsequently rewarded with gifts and experiences a good intoxication, renouncing this world, like Paul and David, or, to put it more boldly, like God in the prophet Habakkuk (?).

. And behold, the hand of him that betrays Me is with Me at the table;

There is nothing more miserable than a soul rigid in stubbornness. For see what the Lord says: "Here is the hand of him that betrays Me with Me at the table", and did not feel insane. The Lord says this not only in order to show that He knows what has to happen, but also in order to show us His goodness and the malice of a traitor, for which this one was not ashamed to be at His supper, and then did not abandon the fulfillment and his intention. The Lord also gives us a pattern for us to try to the end for the benefit of those who fall.

. however, the Son of Man is on his way,

And the Son of Man, he says, is coming, not because he supposedly cannot defend Himself, but because He intended death for Himself for the salvation of people.

but woe to that man to whom He is given over.

Although He is destined to suffer, why did you become so angry that you decided to betray Him? For this, you will get "grief" as your inheritance, that you turned out to be inclined to betrayal, since the serpent is cursed because it served as an instrument of the devil's wiles.

. And they started asking each other which one of them would be who would do it.

Hearing this, the disciples were embarrassed. You will learn more about this in the interpretation of the Gospel of John (see chapter 13

. There was also a dispute between them, which of them should be considered the greatest.

They are now embarrassed not only by suspicion of themselves of betrayal, but from this confusion they pass to an argument, argue about which of them is greater. They came to a dispute about this consistently. Probably one of them said to the other: you want to betray, and this one again to that: no, you want to betray. From here we moved on to what they began to say: I am better, I am bigger, and the like. What is the Lord?

. But he said to them: Kings rule over the nations, and those who possess them are called benefactors,

. but you are not: but who of you is greater, be as the least, and the ruler as the servant.

He tames their confusion with two examples. First, by the example of the pagans, whom they considered evil, declaring that if they thought so, they would be like the pagans.

. For who is greater, the one reclining, or the one serving? is it not reclining? And I am among you, as a servant.

Secondly, by His own example, for by explaining that He serves them, He thereby leads them to humility. It was at that time that He is said to have divided the bread and the cup for them. If I, Who is worshiped by all angelic and intelligent creatures, serve in your midst, then how dare you think a lot about yourself and argue about primacy? It seems to me that He mentioned this reclining and serving not in passing, but to remind them that if you ate from one bread and drank from one bowl, then one meal makes you friends and like-minded. Why then do you have thoughts unworthy of them? Moreover, I did not do that so that I would serve one, and not another, and all of you are equal. Therefore, you also have the same feelings. Perhaps, from all this you and then understand how the disciples were still imperfect then, and afterwards they shone so wonderfully. Let the Manichaeans be ashamed who say that some are naturally incapable of learning, and such cannot be changed.

. But you were with Me in My misfortunes,

. and I will bequeath to you, as My Father has bequeathed the Kingdom to Me,

. let you eat and drink at my meal in my kingdom,

Having said "woe" to the one betraying Me, and meanwhile having taught them (the disciples) that they should be humble, the Lord, as the one betraying, assigns "grief" for his inheritance, so, on the contrary, he says to them: to my temptations; therefore, I will bequeath reward to you, that is, I make an agreement with you that - just as My Father bequeathed to Me, that is, He appointed the Kingdom to Me - you would eat and drink at My meal. Said: "Yes, eat and drink" not because there will be food there and as if His Kingdom is sensible. For in answer to His Sadducees He Himself taught that there is angelic life (); and Paul teaches that the kingdom of God is not "food and drink" (). Therefore, hearing the words: "Yes, eat and drink at My meal", let no one be tempted, but let him understand that they are said in relation to those who are honored by the kings of this world. For those who share the king's meal are considered to be superior over all. Likewise, the Lord says about the apostles that He will prefer them to all.

and you will sit on thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel.

Likewise, when you hear about sitting "on thrones," understand not thrones, but glory and honor. For of the created and born, no one will sit there. Sitting decent to the One Holy Trinity, the Uncreated and King of all God, and the creature, like a slave, must stand, and then we speak bodily about sitting and standing. "Judge", that is, to condemn those who do not believe from "Twelve tribes"... For the disbelieving Israelites are served with no small condemnation by the apostles, who themselves are the Israelites, however, believed.

. And the Lord said: Simon! Simon! behold, Satan asked to sow you like wheat,

Since He rewarded the traitor with grief, and foretold a high honor in the future for them, who were in love for Him, so that they would not become proud, as if they had done something great, that they remained in love with Him and did not betray, says: “Satan asked that sow you", that is, confuse, spoil, tempt; but "I prayed." Do not think, he says, that all this perfection is from you. For the devil is exerting every effort to tear you away from My love and make you betrayers. The Lord turns this speech to Peter, because he was also more daring than others, and was probably proud of the promises of Christ. Therefore, humbling him, the Lord says that Satan has strengthened much against them.

. but I prayed for you,

He speaks thus from humanity, for, as God, what need did He have to pray?

so that your faith does not fail;

I, - he says, - prayed, "So that your faith does not fail"... Although you will be shaken a little, the seeds of faith will remain in you, and although the spirit of the tempter will shake the leaves, the root is alive and your faith will not fail.

and once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.

It is convenient to understand, namely: since I first addressed you with My word, then - after you have mourned your renunciation of Me and come to repentance - confirm the others. For it is fitting for you, who first confessed Me stone and the affirmation of the Church (). But these words can be attributed not only to the apostles, whom Peter had to approve then, but also to all believers until the end of the age. Peter! When you are converted, you will be an excellent example of repentance for everyone, and none of those who believe in Me will despair when looking at you, who, being an apostle, denied and, nevertheless, through repentance again received its former meaning among all the apostles and among God's chosen ones. from the whole universe. Satan asked to sow you and spoil you like pure wheat by mixing mud in it, because he, as usual, envies you for his love for Me. He did the same with Job. But I did not leave you at all, so that your faith does not become completely impoverished. Although I myself prayed for you, do not fall, but, having converted, that is, having brought repentance and tears, be a model of repentance and hope for other believers. What about Peter?

. He answered Him: Lord! I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.

Relying on strong love, he promises what is not yet possible for him.

. But He said: I tell you, Peter, the cock will not crow today, how you will deny three times that you do not know Me.

But the Lord, seeing that he speaks thoughtlessly (for, having once heard from the self-existent Truth, which told him that he would be tempted, he should not have contradicted), announces to him a type of temptation, namely: renunciation. From here we learn the truth that human will is not enough without God's help. Peter was left for a short time and, apparently, loved even ardently, however, when God left him, he was flogged by the enemy. Equally, God's help is not enough without human consent. Judas, although the Lord did everything for his benefit, did not receive any benefit, for he had no good will. So, let us shudder at the thought of the wiles of the devil, how strong they are against the careless. Here and here, although Peter was backed up by God, however, when he was abandoned for special purposes, he came to renunciation. What would he have undergone if he had not been kept by God and had no good seeds hidden in him? For the goal of the devil was to lead him to betrayal; for the devil has "luxurious food," as the prophet says (). Thanks be to God, who does not forsake the saints, the righteous and good-hearted, such as Peter was, tenderly loving and alien to any suspicion about the Teacher.

. And he said to them, When I sent you without a sack and without a bag and without shoes, did you lack anything? They answered: nothing.

The Lord, at the beginning of the sermon, sending disciples to villages and cities, commanded them not to take unnecessary things, not to carry anything even necessary with them, and not to worry about anything. And in this case, they had to know His power. For Himself taking care of them as of the weak, He arranged it so that even without their care in abundance everything needed flowed to them.

. Then He said to them: But now whoever has a bag, take it, and also a bag; and whoever does not have, sell your clothes and buy a sword;

And now He commands the opposite, not contradicting Himself, but declaring to them that until now He looked after them like children and did not force them to take care of anything, and from now on they should consider themselves mature and take care of themselves. I, - he says, - your caring Father, am leaving already. From now on, take the care of your own affairs upon yourself, and do not place everything on Me; for your works will not be as they were easy and not difficult, but you will be subject to hunger and thirst and many calamities. This is hinted at with words about a bag, a bag and a sword. Therefore, be cheerful, since you have a hunger and need for food, which is hinted at by "sumy", and courageous, as you will fall into many dangers, as indicated by the "sword". He says this, of course, not so that they carry swords with them, but to, as I said, declare wars and disasters and make them ready for anything. So that the descendants would not think that the apostles did not bring anything from themselves for piety, but everything was from God, the Lord says: no, let it not be so. For I do not want to use My disciples as soulless instruments, but I demand that they apply what they can of themselves. Indeed, you will find that the apostles, and especially Paul, successfully performed many of the human arts (); unless the help of God was also lacking in them. Together with this, it was useful for the modesty of the apostles. For if they, not caring about anything themselves, expected everything from God and everything was given to them, then they could become proud, as having received something higher than human nature for their inheritance. Moreover, nature would become inactive and corrupt if they did not invent anything of themselves, but expected everything, as they say, in a ground form. Therefore, the Lord tells them: from now on, wear "bags", that is, settle down and take care as those who are hungry, and buy "swords", that is, take care of yourself as those who face dangers and wars.

. for I tell you that it must be fulfilled in me and this written: and numbered among the evildoers. For what is about Me comes to an end.

Some thought of buying a sword differently. Shem, - they say, - He hints at an attack that is about to take place on Him and that He will be captured by people - murderers. Since before this time they argued with each other about primacy, the Lord says: now is not the time to dispute about primacy, but the time of danger and murder. For I, your Teacher, will also be led away to death, and, moreover, to a dishonorable death. But through this the said will be fulfilled in Me: "And was numbered among the villains" (). So, wishing to point out the predatory attack, He mentioned the sword, and did not open it completely, so that they would not be embarrassed by some horror, did not completely keep silent, so that they would not be confused in the event of a sudden attack, especially so that, remembering later, marveled at His foreknowledge and fancied how He, however, gave Himself up to suffer for the salvation of people, and therefore they themselves did not flee from any illnesses for the salvation of some.

. They said: Lord! behold, here are two swords. He said to them: Enough.

I think that the Lord speaks in such a way so that they will receive benefit after, when they remember and understand. Because then they were in such a misunderstanding that they said: "Lord, here are two swords."and He, seeing that they did not understand, says: "enough," although it was not enough. For if it were necessary to use human help against those who came in a robber way, then a hundred swords would not be enough. If not human, but Divine assistance was needed, then two swords were superfluous. However, the Lord did not want to convict them of their misunderstanding, but, having said "enough", went. This is similar to how we, when, talking with someone, we see that he does not understand our words, we say: well, leave it; although not good, so as not to offend him, we leave. The Lord did this because he saw that the disciples did not understand what was said.

He goes ahead and leaves speech, leaving the comprehension of what has been said to the flow of circumstances, just as He once said: "Destroy this temple", and the disciples understood later, after His resurrection (). Some say that the Lord with the word "enough" pointed out the inconsistency of words with circumstances. The disciples said: "Behold, here are two swords", and the Lord, they say, pointing out this incongruity, said: if there are two swords, then this is a lot and enough for us against the crowd that will come at us.

. And going out, he went as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples also followed him.

After the supper, the Lord does not indulge in inaction, pleasure and sleep, but teaches and prays, giving us an example and example. Therefore, woe to those who, after supper, turn to the shameful deeds of fornication. Having taught this to the disciples, the Lord ascends to the Mount of Olives to pray. He loved to do it in private, therefore he is excommunicated from his students. However, He takes disciples with Him, but not all, but only those three who have seen His glory on the mountain ().

. Arriving at the place, he said to them: Pray, lest you fall into temptation.

. And he himself departed from them to cast a stone, and, kneeling down, prayed,

. saying: Father! Oh, if you were pleased to carry this cup past Me! nevertheless, not my will, but thine be done.

Since He is in a struggle and prays, so that this does not seem like a sign of fear, He takes those who themselves have seen His Divine glory and themselves heard the testimony from heaven, so that, seeing Him in struggle, they would consider it a matter of human nature. For to assure that He was truly a Man, He allowed this nature to act in its own way. As a Man, He wishes to live and prays for the carrying of the cup, for man is life-loving; and through this he overthrows the heresies, according to which He became human in a phantom. For if even after such actions (of human nature) they found a reason to gossip in this way, then what would they not have said if these actions had not taken place? So, the desire for the cup to be carried past belongs to human nature, and soon after that the words spoken: however, "Not my will, but thine be done" show that we should have the same disposition and also philosophize, obey the will of God and not deviate, even if our nature attracted us in the opposite direction. "Not My" human "Will, but Thine be done"and this Thine is not separated from My Divine will. The one Christ, having two natures, had, without a doubt, the will or desires of every nature, divine and human. So, human nature first wished to live, for this is inherent in it, and then, following the Divine will so that all people would be saved, the will shared by the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, decided on death, and thus one desire became - saving death.

. An angel appeared to Him from heaven and strengthened Him.

. And, being in a struggle, he prayed more earnestly, and His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

That prayer was from human nature, by the assumption that it had a common passion for life, and not from the Divine, as the accursed Arians say, this is evident from the fact that Jesus was in sweat and such a struggle that, as the proverb says, drops fell from Him blood. For those who work hard are usually said to sweat blood, just as those who grieve bitterly are said to weep in blood. Wishing to show this, namely: that not some thin and seemingly visible liquid flowed from Him, but large drops of sweat were falling, the Evangelist used drops of blood to depict reality. Hence, it is clear that the nature, which exuded sweat and was in a struggle, was human and not divine. For human nature was allowed to experience such states, and it experienced in order, on the one hand, to show that He was not a ghostly man, but on the other, a secret goal, to heal the fear common to human nature, exhausting it in Himself and subjugating it the will of God.

Another may say that sweat protruding from the body and falling to the ground means that, with the encouragement and strengthening of our nature in Christ, the sources of fear in us evaporate, turn into drops and fall from us. For if He did not mean this, that is, the desire to cure our human fear, then He would not sweat like that, even though He was very fearful and cowardly. "And an angel appeared to him from heaven and strengthened him"... And this is for our consolation, namely: so that we know the strengthening power of prayer and, having found out, turn to it in case of misfortune. Together with this, the prophecy of Moses, said in the great song, is fulfilled: "And may all the sons of God be strong" (). But some interpreted these words in such a way that an angel appeared to Him, glorified Him and said: Yours, Lord, is the strength! For You have overcome death and hell and set the human race free. This is true.

. Rising from prayer, He came to the disciples, and found them sleeping with sorrow

. and said to them: why are you sleeping? stand up and pray lest you fall into temptation.

He, finding the disciples asleep, reprimands them and together convinces them to pray in temptations so as not to be defeated by them. For not to fall into temptation means not to be swallowed up by temptation, not to become under its power. Or he simply commands us to pray that our possession is safe and we will not be exposed to any trouble. For to throw ourselves into temptations is to be courageous and proud. How does Jacob () say: "Receive with great joy ... when you fall into various temptations."? What is this, aren't we contradicting ourselves? No, for Jacob did not say: cast yourself in, but when you are exposed, do not be discouraged, but have all the joy and make the involuntary once free. For it would be better if temptations had not come, but when they did, why grieve madly? Show me a place in Scripture where it would be literally commanded to pray to fall into temptation? But you cannot indicate.

I know that there are two types of temptation and that some have the duty to pray for not falling into temptation, they mean a temptation that overcomes the soul, for example, the temptation of fornication, the temptation of anger. And we should have all joy when we are exposed to bodily diseases and temptations. For to what extent "Outer ... man ... smolders", in such "Internal renewed" (). Although I know this, I prefer what is more true and what is closer to the real goal.

. While He was still saying this, a crowd appeared, and one of the twelve, called Judas, walked in front of them, and he came up to Jesus to kiss Him. For he gave them such a sign: Whom I kiss, He is.

Judas put a kiss on those walking on Jesus, but so that they would not be mistaken because of the night, he pointed not from afar. So that Jesus does not hide, for this they come with lanterns and torches. What is the Lord?

. Jesus said to him: Judas! Do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?

He admits to Himself with this enemy kiss. And the thunderous arrows did not wake up in the ungrateful and insidious! Thus, the Savior teaches us gentleness in such circumstances. He only says reproachfully: "Judas! do you betray by kissing? " Are you not ashamed of the very sight of betrayal? Why do you mix betrayal, an enemy's business, with a friendly kiss? And who are you betraying? "Son of Man", that is, humble, meek, indulgent, incarnate for your sake, and moreover, the true God. He says this because until recently he was aflame with love for him. Therefore, he did not offend him, did not call him inhuman and extremely ungrateful, but called him by his own name: "Judas". And I would not have reproached if it did not serve to improve him, if he wanted to. For He did this and, apparently, rebuked so that Judas would not think that He would hide, but so that, at least now, recognizing Him as the Lord as the Omniscient, he would fall to Him and repent. The Lord knew that Judas was incorrigible, however, He did His own, just like His Father did in the Old Testament; knew that the Jews would not listen, however, he sent prophets. And together he teaches us the same thing, namely: that we should not be offended when correcting those who fall.

. And those who were with Him, seeing where the matter was going, said to Him: Lord! shall we not strike with the sword?

. And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

The disciples are inflamed with jealousy and draw their swords. Where did they get them from? It was natural for them to have them, since before this they had killed the lamb and left the table. But the ardent Peter is rebuked because he used zeal contrary to the Lord's intention. While others ask "Shouldn't we hit", he does not expect approval (as everywhere he was ardent for the Teacher!), but strikes "Slave of the high priest" and cuts off his "right ear." This was not done by chance, but as a sign that the high priests of that time all became slaves and lost their correct hearing. For if they had listened to Moses, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory ().

. Then Jesus said: leave it, that's enough. And touching his ear, he healed him.

Jesus attaches the ear; for it is fitting for the great power of the Word to heal the disobedient, and to give them an ear to hear. Jesus performs a miracle in order to show His innocence by this visible miracle over the ear and, at least miraculously, lead them to the idea of \u200b\u200brefraining from rage.

. And Jesus said to the chief priests and the rulers of the temple and the elders who had assembled against Him: As if you came out against a robber with swords and stakes to take Me?

. Every day I was with you in the temple, and you did not raise your hands against Me, but now is your time and the power of darkness.

He speaks "To the high priests and chiefs temple ", that is, stewards appointed to meet the demands of the priests; or he calls those chiefs who were entrusted with the work of building and decorating the temple. He said to them: Every day I taught in the temple, and you did not want to take Me, but now you have come as against a robber. However, you are truly undertaking the deeds of the night, and your power is the power of darkness. Therefore, you have precisely chosen such a time that is decent for you and the business you are undertaking.

. Taking him, they led him and brought him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed from afar. . Then the Lord, turning, looked at Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, as He said to him: Before the cock crows, you will deny Me three times.

Peter, according to the prediction of Christ, turned out to be weak and denied the Lord Christ not once, but three times, and denied with an oath, for Matthew says: "Then he began to swear and swear that he did not know This Man." (). Maybe he was possessed by such shyness, and he was abandoned for a while for his audacity, as if for teaching, so that he would be lenient to others as well. For he was very daring, and if he had not been sober about this circumstance, then in many ways he would have acted autocraticly and without condescension. But then he fell into such horror that he would not have felt the fall if the Lord, turning, did not look at him. Oh goodness! He himself is under condemnation, but is concerned about the salvation of the disciple. And rightly so. For He endured condemnation itself for the salvation of man.

First the disciple denied, then the cock crowed. He denied it again, even up to three times, and the cock crowed again another time. So accurately and in detail Mark describes () and conveys it as having learned from Peter, for he was his disciple. And Luke, as Mark said about this, spoke briefly, without going into details. And Luke's words do not contradict what Mark said. For it is customary for the rooster to sing two or three times at every reception. So, Peter was brought into such oblivion by human weakness that he did not come to his senses from the crowing of the cock, but even after the cock crowed, he denied again, and again, until the blessed look of Jesus brought him into memory.

. And, going out, he wept bitterly.

Mark says that Peter left after the first renunciation (). Then it was natural for him to enter again, so as not to give a greater suspicion that he was Jesus. When he came to his senses again, then he already leaves and cries bitterly. And in order not to be noticed from those who were in the yard, it goes out secretly from them.

Some, I don’t know why, lay down an insane defense in favor of Peter, boldly saying that Peter did not deny, but said: I don’t know this “man,” that is, I know not as a simple man, but as God who became Man. Let's leave this insane argument to others. For they represent the Lord as a lie, they contradict the connection of the gospel speech and cannot agree in any way the order of the narrative. And what should Peter cry about if he did not renounce?

. The people who held Jesus scolded and beat Him;

. and closing Him, they struck Him in the face and asked Him: Prophets, who struck You?

. And many other blasphemies were uttered against Him.

Those who caused this to Jesus were some kind of abusers and unbridled people; for it was necessary that the devil should not abandon a single kind of malice, but pour out all of it, so that our nature, being holy in everything, would conquer and trample it. Since the Lord took our nature for this, in order to strengthen it against all the cunning of the devil and to show that he would not have been defeated at first if he had been cheerful, therefore, when all kinds of devilish malice are poured out on Him, He endures that we subsequently take courage. knowing that our nature in Christ won, and were not shy about anything, apparently, offensive and bitter. Therefore, He endures ridicule and beatings and, being the Lord of the prophets, is mocked as a false prophet. For the words: "prophesy" to us, "Who hit you"are referred to as ridiculing Him as a deceiver, appropriating to Himself the gift of prophecy.

. And how the day came

Drunken servants at night ridiculed and reviled Jesus Christ.

the elders of the people, the chief priests and the scribes gathered, and brought him into their Sanhedrin

. and they said: Art thou the Christ? tell us.

And in the afternoon, the elders and honorable people ask: Is He the Christ?

He told them; if I tell you, you will not believe;

Knowing their thoughts and the fact that, not believing in deeds stronger than those who can convince, they will certainly not believe their words, He says: "if I and i tell you, you won't believe "... For if you believed My words, what would be the need for a real meeting?

. if I ask you, you will not answer Me and do not let me go: Me,

“If I askyou you will not answer "... For they were often silent when asked, for example, about the baptism of John (), about the words: "The Lord said to my Lord" (), about a writhing woman (). When did you listen to Me and believe? When did you not keep silent on the question given to you? Therefore, I will only say that from now on is not the time to tell you and explain who I am (for if you wished, you would know Me from the signs I performed), but from now on it is time for condemnation.

At the same time, one should be afraid, but after such words they became even more furious and in a frenzy ask: "So, You are the Son of God?" He, however, with moderation and indicating the incongruity of their question, answers them: "You say that I am," for He despised their rage, spoke to them fearlessly. Hence, it is clear that the stubborn do not receive any benefit from what is revealed to them secrets, but they accept much more condemnation.Therefore, one must hide them from such, for this is a more humane business.

1 The feast of unleavened bread, called Passover, was approaching.
2 And the chief priests and scribes were looking for how to destroy Him, because they feared the people.
3 And Satan entered Judas, who was called Iscariot, one of the twelve,
4 And he went and talked to the chief priests and rulers how to deliver him to them.
5 They rejoiced and agreed to give him money;
6 and he promised, and looked for an opportune time to deliver him to them when not in the presence of the people.
7 The day of unleavened bread came, on which the Passover was to be killed. lamb,
8 and sent Jesus Peter and John, saying: go, prepare us to eat the Passover.
13 And they went and found as he told them, and prepared the passover.
20 Also the cup after supper, saying: This cup there is The New Testament is in My blood, which is shed for you.
21 And behold, the hand of him that betrays Me is with Me at the table;
22 However, the Son of Man goes according to his destiny, but woe to that man to whom he is delivered.
23 And they began to ask each other which one of them would be that would do it.
24 And there was also a dispute between them, which of them should be considered the greatest.
25 And he said to them, Kings rule over the nations, and those who possess them are called benefactors,
26 but you are not: but who of you is the greatest, be as the least, and the ruler as the servant.
27 For who is greater, the one reclining, or the one serving? is it not reclining? And I am among you, as a servant.
28 But you were with me in my afflictions,
29 And I will bequeath to you, as my Father commanded me the Kingdom,
30 May you eat and drink at my meal in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel.
31 And the Lord said: Simon! Simon! behold, Satan asked to sow you like wheat,
32 but I prayed for you, that your faith will not fail; and once you have returned, strengthen your brothers.
33 He answered him: Lord! I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.
34 But He said: I tell you, Peter, the cock will not crow today, as you three times deny that you do not know Me.
35 And he said to them, When I sent you without a sack and without a bag and without shoes, did you lack anything? They answered: nothing.

37 For I say to you that it must be fulfilled in me and this written: and numbered among the evildoers. For what is about Me comes to an end.
38 They said: Lord! behold, here are two swords. He said to them: Enough.
39 And going out, he went as usual to the Mount of Olives; his disciples also followed him.
40 And coming to the place, he said to them: Pray, lest you fall into temptation.
48 Jesus said to him: Judas! do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?
49 But those who were with him, seeing where the matter was going, said to him: Lord! shall we not strike with the sword?
50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
